George Dodgson Callow (1829-1875) is featured in a number of public collections in the UK, including Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, Brighton and Hove Museum and Art Gallery.
Born in Liverpool in 1829; according to the Parish Register of St Nicholas Church in Liverpool, his father, John Callow was also a painter as was his uncle William Callow and at least one of his brothers. George Callow active 1858-1873, exhibited twice at the Royal Academy: in 1863 he showed the painting "Morning on the River Teign" and in 1864 "Coastal Scene, Isle of Wight". He appears to have specialised in landscapes and maritime painting. He died in 1875.
This particular work is a well detailed watercolour depicting a returning ship being lead in the harbour in rough seas. The fine delicate brush texture capture a beautiful yet dramatic maritime moment in Victorian times. This work is in good condition and it has been preserved in a private collection for future generations who can share and enjoy the evocative emotions it can provide.
The watercolour has been reframed but it retains the original Victorian glass.
    It is signed lower left.

Condition Report: The watercolour is in excellent condition. It has been reframed retaining the original Victorian glass.
