18th century Edinburgh longcase clock (Leith)
Inscribed Rob Alexander Leith
A superb 18th-century Scottish longcase clock by this Edinburgh maker in its original formal case with swanneck pediment flanked with fluted pillars. Similar fluted and canted case sides, flanking the long doors. Completely original and in superior condition. A very special clock with 8-day movement and striking bell, from a top Edinburgh maker. A rare find. Circa: 1780s-90s. Honduras mahogany case.
Little is known about this maker, but the fact of his
name appearing regularly till the year 1718 in these
records makes it apparent he was at that date located
ALEXANDER, ROBERT. Tolbooth Wynd and Shore,
There were apparently three generations of this
name, but authentic proof is awanting to connect these
Leith makers with the above. All evidence available
makes it almost certain that they belong to the same
family. Unfortunately, it is not until the year 1751
that we have documentary proof of this firm's location.
