After Filippo Lauri | Old Master Work in Original Gilt Frame

A fine and dramatic 18th-century Italian oil painting in the Baroque tradition, depicting the classical myth of the musical contest between Apollo, god of music, and Marsyas, the satyr of Phrygia. Painted after a composition by Filippo Lauri (1623–1694), this piece is a superb example of Italian Old Master narrative art.

The scene includes the judgment by King Midas, who observes the contest, rendered with great theatrical flair and emotional intensity. The painting reflects the moral and mythological storytelling so characteristic of Baroque art—particularly the themes of pride, punishment, and divine authority.
