    Antique 1850 Double Fusee Brass Lantern Clock

    This exquisite and very special lantern clock is thought to date back to the mid 1800s. Typical of a clock of its time, it is set in a brass case featuring delicate fretwork and a silvered dial, this double fusee clock strikes the hour and the half hour on a bell and features a pendulum.

     
    It is thought the lantern clock was named due to its similarity to a lantern, or derived from the word ‘latten’, which was a word used for brass around the 17th century, when these clocks first appeared.
    Other names have been used, including Cromwellian clock - this was because the bell at the top resembled a Cromwellian helmet.
