A larger than usual Ancient Egyptian alabaster kohl jar. The ovoid body with drilled tubular interior, off-set disk foot and a wide flattened lip.New Kingdom, Dynasty XVIII, 1550-1307 BC.Height 8.6 cms (3.4 ins).Very Fine condition; a shallow chip to underside of rim; attractive natural patina.Larger than the usual size and beautifully carved.

The Egyptians stored cosmetics (kohl) in squat containers usually made from stone. A kohl pot's specialised function required a certain shape, with an opening wide enough to allow the insertion of an applicator. The shape remained consistent and most such vessels were made of alabaster, but the Egyptian craftsmen also used different coloured materials to achieve variety.Provenance: Ex Bonhams.
