Rare Regency Country House Copper Stockpot & Matching Flat Lid. Provenance: Hassop Hall, Derbyshire — Kitchens of the Earl of Newburgh Circa: 1814 – 1830 Overview An exceptional, museum-quality, museum-sized (No. 1) heavy-gauge copper stockpot complete with its original matching flat drop-on lid. Although the lid displays different handles to the ones on the body of the pot, this was a normal occurence in the Regency period. This magnificent piece of culinary history features explicit, verified aristocratic provenance, originating directly from the grand kitchens of Hassop Hall in Bakewell, Derbyshire. Both the body and the lid are hand-stamped with the inventory markings of the Earls of Newburgh. Historic Provenance & Significance The stamps on the body and lid display the heraldic coronet of a British Earl, positioned directly above the letter 'N' (denoting the Earl of Newburgh) and the inventory number '1'.Hassop Hall was the ancestral estate of the prominent, staunchly Catholic Eyre family. In 1814, Francis Eyre successfully claimed the peerage title of the 6th Earl of Newburgh. Between 1827 and 1833, the family extensively transformed Hassop Hall into a grand classical mansion, constructing a massive, state-of-the-art kitchen. This "No. 1" stockpot was commissioned as the largest, premier flagship vessel for that specific Regency kitchen fit-out. Construction & Technical Details, Dating Evidence: This piece is a masterclass in pre-industrial coppersmithing. It features hand-hammered, interlocking jigsaw-style dovetail joints (cramp seams) running up the side and around the base. This, combined with the heavy cast-brass loop handles, places its manufacture precisely in the late Georgian to early Regency era (c. 1814–1830), long before the advent of Victorian seamless factory stamping. The Lid: The pot retains its authentic, historically correct flat drop-on lid (flush-fit style without an underside vertical rim). Both pieces bear the matching "No. 1" inventory sequence. The stamp on the curved pot body is slightly smaller than the stamp on the flat lid, a standard practice of the era to ensure a clean strike on varying surfaces.Condition Notes: The lid fits minutely tightly, which is entirely normal and expected for a 200-year-old authentic flat-lid set. Over two centuries of intense hearth heating and lifting heavy volumes of liquid, the copper rim has naturally relaxed fractionally out of a perfect geometric circle. The copper displays an excellent, untouched color with historic green copper carbonate oxidation resting safely within the hand-stamped lettering—proving its uncleaned, genuine antique age. Dimensions Height: 13 inches (approx. 33 cm)Diameter: 13 inches (approx. 33 cm)Size: Kitchen Inventory No. 1 (Largest flagship size.) All in all an absolutely gorgeous, desirable and authentic stockpot.
