This antique pearl and enamel ring is a stunning example of Victorian-era mourning jewellery. This beautiful ring blends the sentiment of love and loss perfectly, combining enamel work, sentimental stones and poignant engraving. The head of the ring holds three round half pearls; All pearls remain in good condition with a stunning sheen, a true feat for such soft stones after over 130 years of this ring being worn. The pearls are grain-set, sitting in a line next to each other in stunning geometric settings, highlighting the gemstones beautifully.
In extreme contrast to the gleaming white pearls, the rest of the head houses a deep black enamel design, still shiny and superbly eye-catching. The enamel extends to the top and bottom of the ring, running along to the shoulders where it finishes by sloping into a sharp point, leading us to the outer band of the ring. The back of the band is plain, showcasing the buttery tones of the 18-carat gold of which this ring was crafted. The real detail, however, lies inside the band.
The inside of this ring features an engraving in a beautiful, sloping script. First, the letters 'IMO', standing for 'In Memory Of', followed by two names and their year of passing: 'Henry Thomas Manners died 1895' and 'Margaret Manners died 1893'. This is a double mourning ring, in memory of two people who died just a few years apart. The engraving extends from the clear, crisp hallmark, across the back of the head and all the way around to the maker's mark, which reads 'D&F'. The hallmark of this ring shows an anchor, the symbol of the Assay Office of Birmingham. To the left of the anchor, a crown and the number '18', the confirmation that this ring is 18ct gold. At the end of the hallmark is the date letter, 'b', for 1876/1877. A fabulous piece for lovers of mourning jewellery, Victorian history or just fascinatingly beautiful pieces.
