This gorgeous ring, handcrafted toward the end of the Victorian era, is full of antique charm and elegance. The head holds five lustrous gems: three sparkling old-cut diamonds, beautifully cut with brilliance and personality. The diamonds are alternately spaced with a pair of rectangular cushion-cut rubies. The rubies are a mid-pinkish red, and the stones complement each other perfectly. The rubies and diamonds are claw-set with open galleries. The open claw setting allows light into the entire ring, hitting the stones from every angle and perfectly bringing out the colour and sparkle of the rubies and diamonds.
The cushion cut traces back to the earliest days of gem cutting ( known as lapidary). Before electricity, lasers, or precision tools, stones were not cut for maximum brilliance or mathematical precision. The cushion cut was designed to make stones sparkle and shimmer in different lighting, and the rubies in this ring are a fantastic example, with each facet gleaming perfectly.
The claw settings of this ring are intricate, enhancing the romantic feel of the piece, complementing the stones perfectly, and adding detail from every angle. Each shoulder is finished with subtle lined detailing that fades gently into a plain, polished finish, except for a small dot carved on each side, which completes the ring beautifully. The back of the band is plain and simplistic, while the interior holds a hallmark, clear to read, other than the maker's mark, which has worn away over time, evidence of this ring being held dear throughout history. The hallmark tells us this handmade ring was stamped for 18ct gold in 1890, signified by the date letter 'Q'. The Assay Office of Birmingham's anchor is clearly legible, showing us where this ring was marked.
