This sweet antique signet ring hails from the Art Deco era, an era spanning the 1920s to early 1930s. Though in this era jewellery was often foliate and floral, this signet is sleek and simplistic in design, letting the oval bloodstone intaglio sing. The dark green bloodstone has its defining blood red specks, vivid and beautiful. Bloodstone was believed to have magical powers throughout ancient history and was used as an amulet for protection and healing, as it had a reputation as a warrior's gem.
Ancient Greek and Roman soldiers often carried bloodstone amulets into battle, believing the stone had the power to stop bleeding and enhance physical strength. The red flecks, said to resemble droplets of blood, were thought to symbolise the lifeblood of the earth, giving the wearer more power. Gladiators of the Roman Empire would also sometimes grind bloodstone into a powder and mix it with water, drinking it to boost their strength and stamina.
This oval bloodstone tablet has an inset carving of an anchor and a dolphin, the dolphin's tail curling around the anchor in motion. The maritime design is carved beautifully, and the sharp, simplistic lines remain as crisp as ever. The bloodstone itself is complemented by the wide shoulders and rosy gold band that frame it to perfection. The hallmark is worn and rubbed, showing how loved this ring has been for over a century, but remains legible with the Assay Office of Birmingham's anchor stamp and date letter 'y' showing us that this ring was marked for 9ct gold in 1923. The maker's mark has worn with time too, faintly reading 'J.S&S', presumably for James Swann & Son of Birmingham, established in 1922.
