This is a truly unique and one of a kind early 18th century adjustable (telescopic) 156 cm high candle holder is probably a one-off and a little piece of royal history with historic interest.
This 18th century candle holder has been fashioned from the wood recovered from the first place of Newmarket of King James the 1st after it collapsed whilst the king was in residence in 1613 and later demolished .
The first palace of Newmarket in Cambridgeshire England was commissioned by James the 1st in 1608 who paid £400 for the Griffin Inn and built his first place on the site which was between the present Jockey Club Rooms and Sun Lane.
Unfortunately for the King the main part of his palace collapsed three years later due to subsidence whilst he was in residence, however James the 1st was pulled from under the debris by palace courtiers.
This place was then later demolished, and a second palace was then commissioned and built between 1614 1621 and later used by King Charles the 1st until the early 1640’s the Parliamentarians to control of East Anglia in the English civil war.
This unique item is made of English oak and adjustable to the hight of 156 cm and stands on a wooden circular base 28cm in circumference weighted for stability by an inlaid ring of cement and sitting on 3 x 3cm small, rounded feet. On the reverse of its base there is a glued handwritten 18th century note which reads, “made out of wood from the Palace of Newmarket when pulled down”.
At the head of the flat 2cm wide adjustable (telescopic) sliding rod, there is a circular wooden dish 14cm in circumference with a turned ribbed 6cm high by 3cm in circumference wooded candle holder with a brass ringed top.
This candle stick was purchase over 20 years when it was explained that in 1953 this candle stick was part of several other items disposed of after a refurbishment of a manner house in East Anglia Cambridgeshire England.
This adjustable (telescopic) candle stick is an excellent piece of 17th century history with beautiful warm brown oak patina and a very collectable item for many historical enthusiasts of 18th century royalty just prior to the bloody English civil war.
