Persimmon is shown with Jack Watts up, wearing the Royal colours of the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII.) A chestnut in the background shows the colours of the Duke of Portland. Persimmon was by the great St. Simon out of Perdita by Hampton, and was trained at Newmarket by Richard Marsh. He won seven races from nine starts, including the Derby,St Leger & Ascot Gold Cup. His head may be seen at the National Horseracing Museum at Newmarket.
