Derived from the Greek god Dionysus, Bacchus was the Roman god of fertility, merrymaking and wine. As a symbol of the transformative power of wine - a staple beverage of the ancient Mediterranean world - Bacchus attracted a passionate following of devotees. His celebratory festivals, known as the Bacchanalia, were met with great enthusiasm and often involved excessive drinking, dancing and wild, ecstatic revelry.
