    Introduction

A captivating 19th-century Italian portrait of Giovanni delle Bande Nere, one of the most celebrated military personalities of Renaissance Florence.

The portrait was catalogued by Cheffins Fine Art as After Gian Paolo Pace, detto l’Olmo and follows the celebrated Renaissance likeness of Giovanni in armour.

He appears in profile before rich crimson drapery, wearing dark polished armour and resting his hand upon his helmet.

    Catalogue Details

    Artist / School: Italian School

Attribution: After Gian Paolo Pace, detto l’Olmo

Date: 19th Century, possibly circa 1871

Sitter: Ludovico de’ Medici, known as Giovanni delle Bande Nere (1498–1526)

    Medium: Watercolour

    Signature: Unsigned

Frame: Pierced Florentine giltwood with protective glass

    Catalogue Note

The composition ultimately derives from the Renaissance portrait of Giovanni associated with Gian Paolo Pace and the Uffizi collections.

The sitter’s military identity is communicated through the brilliantly highlighted armour, high gorget and helmet, while the deep crimson background reinforces the formality of the portrait.

    **The Sitter**

Giovanni delle Bande Nere was born Ludovico de’ Medici in 1498, the son of Giovanni de’ Medici il Popolano and Caterina Sforza.

He became a renowned condottiero and fathered Cosimo I de’ Medici, who later became the first Grand Duke of Tuscany.

Giovanni died in 1526 following wounds sustained from artillery.

    Historic Inscription

Historic handwriting on the reverse appears to include “Firenze 1871”.

This potentially indicates a Florentine connection and date, although the inscription has not been independently authenticated and is therefore recorded cautiously.

    The Frame

An elaborate pierced giltwood frame surrounds the portrait, incorporating scrolling foliage and large shell motifs.

The aged gilded surface and openwork carving provide exceptional decorative presence at a relatively intimate scale.

    Provenance

    Private collection.

    Historic handwritten inscriptions verso.
