very fine pair sterling silver entree serving dishes atkin sheffield

On offer here is a very fine pair of late Victorian sterling silver lidded entree or vegetable dishes hallmarked for H.W.Atkin, Sheffield, 1896. Harry Wright Atkin was the senior partner of Atkin Brothers, a large firm of silversmiths producing quality wares, showing at the International Exhibition in London in 1862. Of rectangular form, with shell and gadrooned borders, the covers with detachable handles, monogrammed and dated 17th January1897, these entree dishes come in lovely condition, commensurate with age; no faults, lids fit snugly. The dishes measure 28 cms x 27 cms x 11 cms and weigh 1794g each; just short of 3600g combined. Both bases and handles are hallmarked. The significance of the monogram can only be guessed at; a marriage union perhaps? A fine quality, useful and functional pair of dishes that would grace any table.
