On offer here is a very fine George V sterling silver tea service, consisting of a teapot, hot water jug, sugar, and creamer all hallmarked for Stewart Dawson and Co. Ltd. Glasgow 1910. With mythical beast handles, bird's head spouts and celtic strap work girdle and rims, this service is impressive, both in design and quality of manufacture. At this time, Dawsons was a wholesale/retail business based in Hatton Gardens and Regent St, London. Interestingly, they had also opened premises in Melbourne and Sydney; in fact Dawson later died in Australia (see Culme Directory of Gold and Silversmiths at page 111). The tea service, which weighs a solid 59oz in total, presents in fine condition, commensurate with age. The teapot, 27 cms from handle to spout, and 15 cms in height, has an occasional very small ding; the hot water jug, 20 cms in height and 19 cms from spout to handle, has a very slightly loose handle. The marks are crisp. All in all it would seem that this tea service has seen very little use. A stylish, yet functional set of Scottish antique silver that can still be used and enjoyed to-day.
