We present these two magnificent portraits of men, oil on copper, of the end of the 19th century with frames in gilded wood, probably English.
The first is presented with a hat and a large feather, a long beard and a large calabash pipe (similar to that of Sherlock Holmes). The proud gaze is on the observer, the time that passes on his face, the wide and aquiline nose is immediately visible above the big white whiskers. We can understand, thanks to his clothes, the type of pipe and the type of beard, he is an aristocrat.
Thanks to the green background, we can appreciate all the details and nuances that the painter wanted to convey.
The second is presented with a sailor's hat that shows the white hair that joins the beard that leaves most of the face uncovered, where we can see the detail of his eyes distracted on the left and appreciate in detail the lines of expression , how intrigued by something. He wears a white shirt and a black waistcoat and has a pipe of Wales in his mouth. His clothes are more informal and make us understand that he is a more modest subject.
In conclusion: two small (but large) paintings, of excellent quality, full of nuances and details that can immediately attract attention and compel us to stay to observe them enough to truly appreciate the painter's excellent work.
The frames are gilded wood while the internal frames are engraved and gilded bronze.
