Louis Sue, André Mare, La Compagnie des Arts Françise.
Louis Sue (1875-1968), painter and architect, and Andre Mare (1887-1932), also originally a painter, were the founders of the very important company La Compagnie des Arts Français. Individually, both Sue and Mare had a great origin in the world of decorative arts, but together, their collaboration was quite important producing a very distinctive and much admired style, and they were among the most important designers of the Art Deco movement.
The couple received commissions for many projects, including the French embassy in Warsaw, the French embassy in Washington, DC, Jean Patou's home, the Grand Salon for the Ile de France ocean liner and the cabins for the ship at Steam Paris were among their important commissions.
The distinctive and highly successful collaboration of La Compagnie des Arts Francais forced the critic Jean Badovici to comment that their work was "an admirable association of two different minds, which combined the best qualities to put them at the service of Beauty. One provides secure and precise knowledge of a rigorous sense of geometry; the other a refined and delicate sensitivity. "
As a couple, Sue et Mar contributed their eloquent and distinctive style to the development of one of the most important and influential movements in 20th century design, and their work is still in demand today.
