Palladium became popular during WWII because supplies of gold and platinum were needed for the war effort. Interestingly, it has just been accorded its own hallmark, because until now there was no hall-mark for palladium. This brooch was made in the 1940s, so bears no marks at all. I like this stylish, amusingly designed and well-crafted owl outline brooch. The eyes are set with cabochon rubies, and there are tiny rose-cut diamonds set above. Height: 1 3/4 inches:45mm
