. An Italian mid-19th century micro-mosaic brooch showing a river-bridge with a tower behind, with trees and foliage, in a satin-finish gold frame with scroll ornaments. Micro-mosaics developed in Rome towards the end of the 18th century, carrying on a tradition going back to the Roman period of mosaic floors and wall decorations. These were made from small stone cubes, whereas these later tesserae are glass, much smaller and with a more-or-less infinite range of colours. The brooch is in excellent condition, approximately 2 inches: 25 mm across. See also earrings N593A
