Mastodons were elephant-like creatures that roamed the earth until around 11,000 years ago when they vanished during the great wave of extinctions that saw the disappearance of many of the world's large mammals, including mammoths, sabre-toothed tigers and woolly rhinos. Specimens of their teeth are somewhat rarer than those of their better-known relatives the mammoths, and these two are particularly fine examples.
