A late 19th century Japanese Meiji period (1864-1911) beaten copper (tsuiki doki) dish. The craft started in the Tsubame area of Japan using a sheet of copper and planishing (beating) it into a decorative object. The dish has raised crinkled edges and the shape of a single terrapin wandering over the uneven surface. The reverse side shows all of the small 'planishing' hammer marks in the forming of the terrapin. This unusual dish is in very good original condition. (Circa 1880) Height 4cm (1.6 inches) Diameter 32cm (12.6 inches) Japanese Tsuiki Doki Dish
