Antique Ink on Paper Astrological Art

    India
    1970s
    Approximately 35 x 21 cm

The Hindu pantheon is complex and composed of numerous gods and deities. In this piece, deities often appear on animal mounts (vahanas), their vehicles. The creatures here are all auspicious and this item is likely for fortune telling/astrology. The seller reported this came from a man who had commissioned a temple priest to produce it for him. In this piece are several auspicious signs.

The tortoise represents stability and longevity and is likened to a sage because it can withdraw into its shell and meditate. The tortoise attracts harmony, money peace and long life in a home.

The lotus flower is the foremost symbol of beauty, prosperity and fertility. The deities on the flower represent the Hindu triumvirate of three gods — Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva — who are responsible for the creation, upkeep and destruction of the world.

The boar has symbolic significance. The four legs represent the holy scriptures. Its tusk represents sacrifice, its tongue the sacred fire, its head is priesthood and its two eyes represent the day and night.

The bull represents masculinity, virility, strength, aggression, and fighting power. It is associated with manliness, mighty strength and sexual prowess. On the negative side, bulls symbolize darkness, brute power, excessive sexuality, lust, anger, aggression, promiscuity, waywardness, ignorance, and delusion.

The antelope is the vehicle of the moon god, Chandra who is associated with the night, plants and vegetation.

Birds are also associated with spiritual bliss, freedom, insight, and wholesomeness. Birds have long been associated with sensuous longing and attachment. Birds may be messengers between lovers.

The crocodile is a symbol for divinity. It may also be appealed to for fertility.
