This handsome French mirror circa 1880 is in the style of the original Louis Philippe archtop, and has a deeply outcurving frame with a ropetwist sight edge. The outer edge is plain but with floral moulding to each of the corners, inspired by the wonderfully detailed Louis Philippe mirrors (1830-48), that once adorned the royal quarters of the Palace of Versailles in 19th century France. It has a lovely decorative cartouche of acanthus leaf and foliage across the arched top, the effect of which gives this mirror a luxurious appearance. The subtlety of the water etched frame is a perfect example of the understated glamour that Louis Philippe mirrors are well-known for. The edge of the mirror plate is bevelled and it is clean and sparkly with no signs of age. The original mirror backing has been replaced at some point. Some minor signs of previous use.
