On offer here is a fine Victorian sterling silver tea service, consisting of a teapot, sugar and creamer hallmarked for Elkington & Co London 1893-5; and a hot water jug of matching design hallmarked for Walter and John Barnard, London 1894. Of half reeded form, with shell leaf and scroll borders, the teapot has an ebonised handle and finial; the hot water jug a fruitwood handle; and the cream jug and sugar basin have gilt interiors. All pieces carry the same monogram. Elkington's of course is one of the most well-known firms of designers and retailers, exhibiting at many international fairs and exhibitions. The fact that one piece carries the Barnard hallmark does not surprise; Elkingtons, as retailers, were supplied by Barnards, amongst others (see Culme Directory of Gold and Silversmiths at page 141). The teapot measures 23 in length x 10 cms in height and weighs a solid 596g; the sugar basin 16 cms x 8 cms weighing 281g; the cream jug 13 cms x 8 cms, 185g; and the hot water pot 19 cms x 15 cms, 546g. All the pieces present in very good condition, commensurate with age. The teapot has a very slight movement in the handle; the jug also and the finial is slightly loose, occasional very small ding; the creamer has a very small ding to one foot; the sugar has no issues. All in all it would seem that this tea service has seen very little use. A stylish, yet functional set of English Victorian antique silver that can still be used and enjoyed to-day.
