    Antique Commemorative Silverplate Elephant Tray

    To Libya via Sri Lanka
    35 cm long 24 cm at widest point

     
    I found this fascinating tray at the main market in Tripoli, Libya. I have always been fond of elephants and a tray with them quietly circling an island is very eye catching.
     
    The tray is irregularly shaped. It has an island in the center and stylized waves which are depicted around the island. It is accented with embedded red glass.
    This unusual silver plated decorative tray is from Sri Lanka and was a gift from a Sri Lankan dignitary to a Libyan dignitary. A dedication appears on the tray.
     
    The name Mahinda Rajapaksa appears in the dedication. He was the president of Sri Lanka from 2005 until 2015 so it is safe to assume this tray was a gift during this period.
