We present you with this wonderful and extremely rare pair of candleholders from the late 19th century Napoleon III era, embodying the exceptionally ornamental and dramatic Rococo style of Louis XV. Inspired by a model made by a great French Classicist painter and sculptor, Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier (1815-1891), these candleholders are adorned with figurines of putti holding torches at their top. Standing at 30 centimetres in height, they also feature rocaille-shaped bases decorated with acanthus leaves, showcasing superb craftsmanship with exquisite gilding and chiselling. The application of gilding was done using the mercury gilding method.Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier (1815 – 1891) was a French Classicist painter and sculptor, most famous for his depictions of Napoleon, his armies and military themes. He documented sieges and manoeuvres and was the teacher of Édouard Detaille. He enjoyed great success in his lifetime and was acclaimed both for his mastery of fine detail and assiduous craftsmanship. The English art critic John Ruskin examined his work at length under a magnifying glass, marvelling at Meissoniers manual dexterity and eye for fascinating minutiae. Meissoniers work commanded enormous prices and in 1846 he purchased a great mansion in Poissy, sometimes known as the Grande Maison. The Grande Maison included two large studios, the atelier dhiver, or winter workshop, situated on the top floor of the house, and at ground level, a glass-roofed annexe, the atelier dété or summer workshop. Like Alexandre Dumas père, he excelled at depicting scenes of chivalry and masculine adventure against a backdrop of pre-Revolutionary and pre-industrial France, specialising in scenes from 17 and 18th-century life. The pair of candlesticks from the Empire period featuring caryatids are exquisite examples of neoclassical design, typical of the early 19th century, particularly during the reign of Napoleon. These candlesticks are crafted in gilded bronze, showcasing the opulence and attention to detail characteristic of the Empire style. Each candlestick features a slender, elongated column as its central shaft, rising from a circular base. The most striking element is the incorporation of caryatids—female figures used as structural supports. These caryatids are depicted in classical Greco-Roman attire, draped in flowing garments that accentuate their elegant posture. Their hair are styled in a classical manner, and they often have a serene, idealized expression, emphasizing their role as both decorative and functional elements. The gilded bronze finish gives these candlesticks a rich, golden hue, enhancing their luxurious appearance and reflecting light beautifully. The craftsmanship demonstrates a high level of skill, with fine details meticulously rendered to create a sense of refinement and grandeur, perfectly embodying the aesthetics of the Empire period. The “Return from Egypt” styleSince the Battle of the Pyramids and Napoleons capture of Cairo in July 1798, Egyptian references have become increasingly important, particularly in art and furniture. The publication of the expeditions work, “La Description De L Égypte” (1826), abounded in new elements, inspired many artists and, through architecture and the decorative arts, transformed the environment of the French.A veritable fad swept from France across Europe to Russia. Houses, fountains and interiors were decorated in the Egyptian style. This style, contemporary with the Consulate, is called “Return from Egypt”. This style lasted only a very short time (around ten years), before being replaced by the Empire style. For his birthday, he imagined the same bracelet with a gold clasp in the shape of a marine snap hook. To make it even more precious, he added links along the length of the bracelet. Thus was born the first jewel in the Force 10 line in 1966. Carrying the passion for the sea and sailing of Fred Samuel and his family, the Force 10 bracelet is today one of the emblems of the Maison. The Force 10 collection has become a symbol of courage, perseverance and self-confidence.By daring to orchestrate this unexpected meeting of a braided steel marine cable and a gold shackle, two materials that until then had seemed to oppose each other, FRED has made jewelry history. A formidable avant-garde vision, it has since given rise to a collection that is both casual and jewel-like.Synonymous with great resistance, strength and willpower, the Force 10 collection reveals precious know-how through the solid, meticulous braiding of its cable. This collection is a natural extension of the iconic jewels sporting values, character and powerful identity. We are delighted to present you with this stunning 19th century clock featuring a seated figure of a young nobleman atop the clock case in gilt bronze in the style of Louis-PhillipeRestoration Charles X.The young man, figuring as the central point, is dressed in a lavish attire reminiscent of the Baroque era, with a loose-fitting jacket, breeches, and an elegant pair of boots. He is represented in a relaxed manner, resting his elbow on his knee. His hat and his bag are placed next to him. He is captured in a melancholic or completive moment thanks to his posture which gives him a dreamy, reflective quality. This kind of imagery was typical in 19th-century romantic movement, where artistic and literary figures were admired for their ability to transcend the mundane and where the individuals unique imagination was prioritised above the strictures of classical form. The clock dial itself shows considerable wear, especially when compared to the more well-preserved gilded elements. The surface appears darkened, and shows wear usual for 19th century objects. Although the Roman numerals are still visible, the clarity is diminished precisely due to the worn surface. The craftsmanship of this piece is of very high quality. The gilding shows a lot of ornaments, such as the subtle floral motifs flanking the clock dial, while the base of the clock is adorned with classical scrollwork. Indeed, the lower side of the clock has a wide section, featuring elaborate designs of flowing acanthus leaves. This base is wider and sturdier than the upper part, providing balance to the overall composition of this beautiful piece. The noblemans figure’s thoughtful posture suggests reflects the 19th century Romantic movement, which was prevalent in the world of art at the time and which emphasised the awareness and acceptance of emotions, individuality, sentimentality, and a return to nature. This exquisite object would complement any beautiful interior designed in the traditional 19th-century style, making it an ideal addition for lovers and connaisseurs of Romanticism in both art and literature.
