black forest bear stand

Very well-carved bear stand from the "Black Forest". Condition and colour is excellent, and it is structually sound throughout. The carving is detailed and precise, especially on the small carved bears on the top. An extremely attractive example.

A common misconception is that they originate from the Bavarian Black Forest of southwestern Germany, but it has in fact been established that they are the creation of Swiss carvers, originating in the town of Brienz. Origin: Switzerland, circa 1880.
