This very unusual Ballooning brooch is engraved on the back 'Marco 28 1897' and is said to relate to a balloon flight in Brazil (Marco=March) on that date. The brooch is in 15ct gold and is engraved with a scene showing the balloon over the sea between two islands engraved with a houser on the one side and palm trees on the other. The balloon and basket are each set with a Brazilian diamond. The brooch has a satin finish, and there is a small irregularity where the pin is soldered on. Ballooning items are rare, and this was obviously specially made to commemorate the flight. Width: 1 7/8 inches:48mm Height: 1 5/8 inch:42 mm
