    antique clocks: mantel clocks

Mantel clocks (or 'Shelf clocks') are relatively small house clocks traditionally placed on the shelf, or mantel, above the fireplace. The form, first developed in France in the 1750s, can be distinguished from earlier chamber clocks of similar size due to a lack of carrying handles. These clocks are often highly ornate, decorative works. They are most frequently constructed from any combination of ormolu, porcelain, and wood. One of the most common and valued types of mantel clocks are the French Empire-style timepieces.

    • Unique mantel clock, made of glass and bronze. Royal Russia. Early 19th century.

Unique mantel clock, made of glass and bronze. Royal Russia. Early 19th century.

      sia antion, riga, latvia

A unique mantel clock made of glass and bronze made during the period of Nicholas I (1825-1855) in the style of the late Empire. The solar theme of the luminary rising from the waters is associated with the nature of abundance in the ornament of the dial and the dominant flowerpot on conical glass. The general leitmotif of the mobility of waves and time , permeates the work and is noticeable in the rhythm of the glass and the dial pattern. In the center of the composition, He and She are Helios’ assistants. Alpha and Omega of the universe. They rise from the waves and hold the luminary, affirming love, life, fertility. This is the connecting thread of times. The clock is made of gilded and polished bronze and cobalt glass, presumably made at the Imperial Glass Factory in St. Petersburg, with bronze bases of floral designs. The upper part of the clock is made in the shape of a vase and is decorated with gilded bronze floral decoration. The dial is marked with Roman numerals, decorated with a decor in the form of sun rays rotated in an hour circle. Literature: Sychev Igor. Russian lamps from the era of classicism. 1760-1830. M. • Bronze fireplace clock set with candelabra.

Bronze fireplace clock set with candelabra.

      sia antion, riga, latvia

Impressive bronze mantel clock set with candelabra by Moreau, on marble pedestals. It is a kind of altar of emancipation from the time of Napoleon III. The graceful, charming huntress goddess steps down from her pedestal, taking a step into the world of mortals and time. She is the alluring and armed nymph of natures blossom. Its plasticity and silhouette are consistent with the unbridled splash of sprouting bronze in the six-armed candelabra. Also a common stylistic denominator is the monumental-Renaissance work on marble and an abundant arsenal of bronze decor with torches - raising the ensemble to the altar of the Goddess. Manufacturer: Signature on the figure - Moreau, Emile via and Cie mechanism. Paris Clock height 80 cm, width 50 cm, depth 27 cm, candlestick height 85.5 cm. • Mantel clock Cavalryman

      Mantel clock Cavalryman

      sia antion, riga, latvia

An impressive mantel clock with a mounted hussar above the dial. Fine metal work and coordinated coloring represent a mounted hussar in an attack in the mountains. Snatching a saber on a rearing horse, he climbs onto a rock. The Hungarian horsemans headdress perhaps indicates and romanticizes the Hungarian revolutionary events of 1848-1849. Despite the static frontality of the ceremonial portrait the composition is organized asymmetrically. The subtle texture of the silvered pendulum and the matching patina of the horse set off the overall sound of gold. Its large ligature of the Renaissance pattern is a sign of the time of Louis Philippe - the end of romanticism. H-44cm. A complete revision of the mechanism was carried out. Width: 30.5cm, Height: 44cm, Depth: 11cm, Weight: 5kg, Condition: Signs of wear commensurate with age, Material: Gold metal, ID: 1552
