antique victorian silver punch bowl frederick elkington 1884 19th c

This is a large gorgeous antique Victorian sterling silver punch bowl bearing the makers mark of the renowned silversmiths Frederick Elkington, of Elkington & Co and hallmarks for Sheffield 1884.

This exquisite punch bowl is also ideal as a champagne cooler and it has beautiful scalopped top with lion's kead ring handles, and an incredibly detailed embossed half fluted decoration wirh ribbons and garlands with a hemispherical body raised on a pedestal foot.This is truly a special item and it will attract the maximum amount of attention, the quality and craftsmanship are undeniable.Condition:In excellent condition with clear hallmarks and no dings, dents or signs of repair. was a silver manufacturer fromBirmingham, England.
The firm was founded byGeorge RichardsElkingtonand his brother, HenryElkington, in the1830s. It operated under the name G. R.Elkington& Co. until 1842, when a third partner, Josiah Mason, joined the firm. It operated asElkington, Mason, & Co. until 1861, when the partnership with Mason was terminated. The firm operated independently asElkington& Co. from 1861 until 1963. It was then taken over by British Silverware, Ltd. In 1971 British Silverware, Ltd. became a subsidiary of Delta Metal Co. Ltd.
Over the course of history it became very successful and was one of the prime producers of silver plating.Elkingtonreceived various royal warrants of appointments. One of their most famous pieces is theelectrotypecopy of theJerninghamWine Cooler, at theVictoria & Albert Museum.
