An exceedingly well preserved Victorian electroplated nickel-silver decanter coaster.
Made by the grandfather of British electroplating Elkington & Mason, better known as Elkington & Compnay of Birmingham. Being one of the few makers' to have published their date-letter coding, this piece can safely be dated to 1861.
With an outstanding pierced gallery wall and a turned teak base. The central button, althugh not hallmarked, is probably silver rather than plate. This has been defined because the superb effigy of a stag has been deeply engraved, so much so that if this were plate, the underlying metal would show thorugh.
The base has a replacement felt covering (not surprising after 151 years of service!).
