antique pair victorian silver plated five-light candelabra by elkington 19th c

This is a truly magnificent and highly distinguished pair of antique Victorian silver-plated five-light, four branch table candelabra by the renowned silversmiths Elkington & Co, Birmingham, bearing the Elkington mark with date letter for 1873.

Each of these splendid candelabra features a stunning fluted stem with Corinthian Capital cast socket and detachable arms with four foliage cast branches, each terminating in a tapering socket with a further central socket.To add even more splendour to this superb pair, they stand on an impressive square shaped bases decorated with classical urns.The undersides of the candelabra bear the registration number 18123.The attention to detail is fantastic and they are certain to attract attention wherever they are placed.Condition:

Elkington& Co
was a silver manufacturer fromBirmingham, England.
The firm was founded byGeorge RichardsElkingtonand his brother, HenryElkington, in the1830s. It operated under the name G. R.Elkington& Co. until 1842, when a third partner, Josiah Mason, joined the firm. It operated asElkington, Mason, & Co. until 1861, when the partnership with Mason was terminated. The firm operated independently asElkington& Co. from 1861 until 1963. It was then taken over by British Silverware, Ltd. In 1971 British Silverware, Ltd. became a subsidiary of Delta Metal Co. Ltd.
Over the course of history it became very successful and was one of the prime producers of silver plating.Elkingtonreceived various royal warrants of appointments. One of their most famous pieces is theelectrotypecopy of theJerninghamWine Cooler, at theVictoria & Albert Museum.
