Rare French straw marquetry Billet-doux Case of cylindrical form Circa 1770.
This box is for the exchange of billet-doux, or love letters.
This box is decorated in beautifully executed straw-work, the romantic motifs hinting at its purpose. One side features a a brightly feathered bird amongst forget-me-nots. on the other side a heart crowns an unfolding piece of paper, with red and blue Cupids arrows crossed with quiver and torch. Imagine receiving a billet-doux slipped surreptitiously in a box such as this. It could be life changing!
