ITEM 1504 DESCRIPTION
An African ritual figure attributed to the African Yoruba People of Nigeria.
The ritual figure is kneeling and holding a bottle in the two hands that are carved as a table or platform for the bottle.
The ritual figure is wearing a short skirt and is kneeling on a round pedestal base with slanted, incised, and spaced lines around the side of the rounded pedestal base.
The head is an elongated oval shape with large almond-shaped slit eyes, the nose is large and protruding as well as the lips.
The ears are evident and the hairstyle has rows.
The back of the ritual figure has long vertical and spaced tribal scarification marks.
On top of the ritual figure's head is a large receptacle with spaced, vertical wood pieces on the sides with three-lined Xs'.
The receptacle has a wide rim with geometric markings.
The interior and rim of the receptacle show use; blackened ash and a small circular chip.
The carved ritual figure is a fertility divination offering.
Yoruba figures created in this form are for rituals.
The large container on top of the head would be used for the sacred palm nuts which are an important element in the Yoruba ritual of divination.
Among the Yoruba, seniority in social status is seen as dominant and deserving of respect, which is shown in a kneeling position.
Above all, the Yoruba People express respect and submission to their deities (Orisha).
Individuals will honour the Orisha with votive objects in designated shrines.
Circa mid-20th century. ?
