Walnut Work Box with a view of a Tea Clipper / Sailing Ship which is flying two flags one of which is the british flag. The ship is frame with checquered and herring bone inlay of stained sycamores and boxwood, similar inlays surround each walnut panel around the front and sides of the sewing box.
The interior of the sewing box is lined with its original green paper with gold stars and dots, the interior lid has a victorian collage of garden flowers and a young sailor holding a british flag. The rermovable tray is compartmentalised with several compartments and has four lids with turned bone handles.
Theorys about these types of boxes.
These type of boxes were made by Lighthouse Keepers who sold them directly to the sailing captains and owners of the ships.
Also another theory is these were made by ships carpenters, for gifts for their loved ones!
This sewing box comes with a fully working lock and tassled key.
