19thC Mahogany Stationery Box with impressed mark for Smith Elder & Co.

A first quality, heavy mahogany stationery box from the first half of the 19thC and in very good condition, with sloping, lift-up top revealing a fitted interior, the front edge stamped Smith Elder & Co. and fitted with a lock, though the key is missing.

NB: Smith Elder & Co. were a leading 19thC publisher whose first major success was the publication of Charlotte Bronte's 'Jane Eyre' in 1847 and whose authors included many of the most notable Victorian names. However, they opened their business in 1816 as a Bookseller & Stationer in Fenchurch Street, London and, though there is no way of knowing who actually made this piece, it surely dates from the period between say 1820 & 1850 before publishing became the sole focus of the business.
