19th century bronze statue of jules marmottan by emile-louis truffot

This bronze statue of Jules Marmottan (1829-1883) stands 455mm high, and is a reduction of the full size statue which was unveiled on 17th November 1887 in Place Marmottan, Bruay-en-Artois, Pas-de-Calais. It is by Emile-Louis Truffot (1843-1895) and was cast by the Parisian foundry of Chatel.

In 1903, the sculptor Gustave Crauk (1827-1905) sculpted a standing model of Marmottan, having sculpted a bust of him in 1900. In 1930, at the initiative of Paul Marmottan (son of Jules) a full size bronze of Crauk’s model was cast by the Barbedienne Foundry. Cauk’s statue replaced Truffot’s statue at Bruay. Troffot's original full size statue now resides at the the Centre Historique Minier at Lewarde, as shown in the last photograph.

Jules Marmottan was successful in a number of fields, and was a respected philanthropist. Much can be found about him online.

When Jules Marmottan died, he left his only son Paul a small fortune, and also his house near the Bois de Boulogne. This house eventually became what is now the Musée Marmottan Monet.

This bronze is in excellent, undamaged, original condition. It has age related dirt in some of the crevices, some surface marks as per photos, and some green patches, particularly on the rear lower legs.

I am the great grandson of the eminent art bronze founder Ercole J Parlanti, and have an interest in all things bronze. I am a private collector of bronzes, and occasionally I sell on bronzes that I believe have a particular historical interest. Among the prestigious organisations that have bought from me over the years are: Westminster Abbey, London. National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. Orange Order Museum, Belfast. The Family of Joseph Chamberlain. Historical Museum of the Carabinieri Corps, Rome. The Scottish Terrier Club of America. Balliol College, Oxford. and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Washington D.C. I also sell other interesting antiques as and when I have them available.
