A fine 18th century George III wool work sampler. The sampler was sewn by Elizabeth Susanna Hansard on March 30 1792. The centre scene of the sampler is a woven basket of many different flowers all beautifully sewn and below is a basket, a kennel and a dog. The sampler also contains six crowns, two temples and two poems with a lattice border with flowers. The sampler is in good condition for it's age with a couple of minor holes just above the right hand temple. The old frame is Edwardian when the sampler must have been re-mounted. "Sweet children wisdom you invites to hearken to her voice She offers to you rare delights most worthy of you choice Eternal blessings in her ways you shall be sure to find O therfore in your youthful days your great creter mind" "If life was a thing that money could buy The rich then would liver but the poor they must die But in god in his goodness hath order'd it so That the rich and the poor to Judgment must go" (Circa 1792) Height 54.5cm (21.5 inches) Width 43cm (16.9 inches)
