This exquisite and substantial gold mourning ring is circa the Georgian era, when mourning traditions were held to importance when marking the death of someone close. This particular mourning ring is a comfortable band, rather minimalist in terms of mourning jewellery but perfectly executed with detailed gold lettering on black enamel, framed by a milled border.
This detailed gold lettering on this ring reads 'CALEB . FLEMING . D.D:0B:21 . JULY . 1779 . AE:80'. The ring is in excellent condition with little to no loss to the enamel , every line still crisp and clean. The tone of the gold band is wonderfully rich, with two rubbed and worn stamps inside the band, possibly maker's marks, showing how this ring was treasured and lovingly worn on the hand of another.
Caleb Fleming (as seen in this stippled depiction by John Hopwood) was born on 4th November 1698 in Nottinghamshire and brought up in Calvinism, or Reformed Christianity. He later became a pupil at a non-conformist academy, run by Protestants who did not conform to the Church of England. He later moved to London in 1727 with his wife ( daughter of John Harris of Hardstoft, Derbyshire) and his family, publishing and distributing pamphlets of his beliefs, disagreeing with many mainstream religious practices at the time. His writings discussed moral corruption and issues he saw within society, as seen in his 1773 'A Dissertation Upon the Unnatural Crime of Self-Murder', where he explored theological and moral arguments against suicide. He preached for congregations of many different denominations, but settled in his final position - as a Baptist minister. He died on 21st July 1779, and was buried in Bunhill Fields Burial Ground. Fleming presided over the christening of Elizabeth Peyton (1757-1829), daughter of Abel Peyton (1722-1801), the family to whom this mourning ring once belonged. Caleb himself had 10 children with his wife, one of whom survived him.
The Peyton Family are descendants of William Malet de Graville, who was present at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and a companion of William the Conqueror. He took the name of Peyton in the 12th century when Reginald Peyton, his grandson, was given land in return for pledged service to the Earl of Norfolk. He was given both Peyton Hall and a manor in Boxford. Peyton Hall still survives today.
Provenance: Formerly part of a collection of the Peyton family, by descent.
