This poignant and historic mourning ring hails from the Georgian era, when mourning traditions were commonplace and rings like this one were given to the loved ones of the deceased. When an important, respected or wealthy person had passed, mourning rings were sometimes distributed at funerals.
The detailing on this ring is a testament to the reputation of the deceased. The enamel work is fine and delicate, framed by an intricate ridged border on a thin yet substantial band. The golden text reads ' THE. REVD THOS AMORY. D.D .OB. 24. JUNE . 1774. AE:73'. There is a small amount of wear to the enamel, showing the regularity with which this ring was worn, but the condition is fantastic - it has clearly been treasured over the years. The band itself is a rich yellow gold tone with a wonderful antique patina to the inside of the band.
Reverend Thomas Amory (1701-1774), whose grave lies in Bunhill Fields Burial Ground, was born Jan. 28, 1701 in Taunton, and educated under the care of his uncle, Mr. H.Grove, who had an academy for training young ministers. He grew up to be a respected tutor and minister, ordained in 1730. After the death of his uncle, H.Grove, in 1738, Thomas Amory succeeded him as chief tutor in the academy in Taunton. Here he became greatly admired by his own congregation, neighbouring congregations and ministers, as well as the Independent and Baptist denominations of the Church of England. You can find out more of his works and religious practices here.In 1741, at age 40, he married Mary, daughter of the Rev. S. Baker of Southwark, a prominent 18th-century Presbyterian minister. By his wife Mary, he had five children, four of whom survived him. He moved to London in October 1759 to become afternoon preacher at the Old Jewry meeting house. He received the degree of D.D. Edin. in 1768, and was Tuesday lecturer at Salters' Hall from 1768, and morning preacher at Newington Green. He died on 24 June 1774, as seen on the detailed inscription of this ring in his memory. His grave reads that he was 'employed for more than fifty years in humbly endeavouring to discover the religion of Jesus Christ in its origin and purity.'
