the antique early victorian amethyst and black onyx mourning ring

This piece is a wonderful example of Victorian mourning jewellery, the death certificate and ancestry papers of Mrs Charlotte Stephens, who died in 1842. This mourning ring, circa the 1840s, features a domed panel of black onyx with a wonderful polish, set east to west across the band so it spans almost the entire width of the finger. Set within a gold surround is a stunning mid-purple amethyst, round mixed cut with a fantastic clarity. The surround itself is intricately engraved, fitting with the style of the border of the head with its swirling, scrolling design.
To the back of the head is engraving in a beautiful sloping script, reading ‘Mrs C Stephens Died 18th July 1842 Aged 53 ’-the name, death date and age of the deceased whom this ring is in memory of. In the accompanying documents, we can see that Mrs Charlotte Stephens died of a diseased liver.
The head of this ring is framed wonderfully by split shoulders with the same foliate engraving that follows to the band, which is of a plain, polished finish. This ring has been electronically tested and assessed as 15ct gold.
Important Sizing Note: This antique ring's true size is an N but fits like an L due to its wide shape and large head. Free Resizing will be 'to best fit' the size you request; you should request the size of your finger.
