A fantastic post Edwardian era buckle ring, sleek and classic in it's design, perfect for daily wear. This ring is crafted in 9ct rose gold in a design that remained popular throughout history. A large buckle sits at the front of the ring, with punctuated golden 'belt holes' and lined detailing making up the end of the belt. The ring sits flush with the finger, comfortable for daily wear and a fantastic piece to stack with other rings.
The belt-and-buckle design has held hidden meaning throughout history; buckle jewellery was extremely fashionable in the Victorian era: buckle rings and bracelets were worn frequently, popular across genders and subtly woven into many pieces, such as signet and mourning rings. The belt-and-buckle motif is thought to have symbolised loyalty, strength and eternity, with the circular form resembling an everlasting connection or unbreakable bond. This became particularly popular after the publication of Sir Walter Scott's The Antiquary (1816), featuring the phrase "Let virtue be your buckle.", and the belt and buckle's popularity continued into the early to mid 20th century.
Inside the band is the hallmark, telling us by the letter mark 't' that this beautiful piece was made in 1918 and confirmed by the Assay Office of Birmingham for 9ct gold. The maker's mark sits to the left of the hallmark, reading 'CyBs', still clear after many years of wear. A wonderful piece for daily wear.
