ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in Newark where he spent most of his formative years and newphew of the artist William Cubley (1814-1896). In 1888 he moved to Matlock Bath (Peak District) and from there to Wolverhampton. Known to have exhibited from 1882-1904 in London, Birmingham & Nottingham, this included the Royal Academy from 1887-1902. He specalised in landscapes using oil obtaining inspiration, like many artists of the period by the mountains of Wales and Scotland, along with the more gentle countryside of the Midlands. Cubley's paintings are very much defined by a romantic impressionist style.
A listed artist with 20 of his paintings in the national collection held by museums and art galleries in Newark, Wolverhampton, Stoke-on-Trent and also by the National Trust.
