- Unique, eye catching cameo pendant. Size circa 6 x 4cm, with bale. Weight circa 11 grams.
- Set in a custom, hand crafted sterling silver, embellished wrapped mount with an 18kt gold wash.
- Very good condition. Some very slight, barely noticeable staining. Never worn.This is a charming and well carved, Italian contemporary Sardonyx shell cameo depicting mother and child. There is much detail throughout the cameo and both the faces are carved frontally, which is not common. The shell is a little curved along the face of mother, making her rise up in a 3-dimensional way, like a mini-sculpture, especially the nose. She has lovely features brought to life by the gifted carver. The child, who is peeping over her left shoulder, also has a very endearing look, even if he is carved in shallower relief than the mum. Mother wears her flower-adorned hair, which also has a very sculpted look to it, in flowing wavy tendrils cascading down her bare chest. More flowers grace the mother’s bosom with face turned to her right where two birds perch on the shoulder. This piece is contemporary, probably after the year 2000. The shape of the cameo is irregular and it is wrapped in a charming, hand-crafted custom frame with tiny flowers, embellished with what appear to be zirconia or similar. At the top is an enhancer which would make it possible for the pendant to be worn with a 5mm (circa), beaded or pearl necklace. The frame is stamped 925 silver and is gilded in 18kt gold. There is also a maker’s mark which I find a little hard to read. The piece is a nice size being circa 5cm by 4cm not including the bale which adds circa another 1cm to the length, and weighs around 11 grams. It is in very good condition with no serious defects to either the shell or frame. There is a tiny bit of yellowing on the mother’s cheek and upper lip, but not very noticeable to the naked eye. This beautiful cameo would make a wonderful gift for Mother’s Day, or for a new mother. It is sure to be a conversation starter and a fine piece of jewelry to add to your wardrobe or collection.
