A lovely oil on canvas depicting a landscape scene with river or sea meeting the shore by a small town/port, with what appears to be a ruined castle in the background. The painting is typically, for the artist who studied in France, impressionistic with an extensive use of green to indicate a misty morning. The artist traveled widely and I have been unable to identify the scene though the buildings do indicate it is the UK. The painting is in excellent condition and is signed to the lower right. The painting is also mounted in the original gilt frame. Bates (1867-1943) traveled widely on the continent and the middle east, but is most well known in his native Stockport and Manchester, he exhibited many, many times at Manchester City Art Gallery. C.1890.
