This authentic piece of late 19th early 20th century African trial art is made from two pieces of hollowed-out tree bark and is 49cm by 17cm by 24cm.
The outside of the upper half is decorated with carved crocodiles and fish around the sides and handle. Inside the lower half are 8 hollowed out round indentations which contain large plant seeds, these seeds were apparently used as counters when gambling.
The box has a lovely rich brown patina that only occurs through years of handling and usage.
