GREAT DISCOVERIES: MAINE HOMEOWNER FINDS PICASSO PAINTING, SELLS AT AUCTION FOR OVER $150,000

A Maine homeowner recently unearthed a Pablo Picasso painting in the closet of their great aunt’s house. According to theBangor Daily News, the painting, “Le Tricorne,” was sold at auction for $150,000 plus a 24% buyer’s premium. Following the auction, the “Le Tricorne” buyer has 120 days to authenticate their purchase via the Picasso Administration. Once the painting is authenticated, the sale will be finalized.

The discovery came after a home was passed down to the seller from their great aunt. “Le Tricorne” and several other paintings were stored in one of the home’s closets. The seller told the Bangor Daily News that these paintings may have been kept in the home for 50 years.

How “Le Tricorne” was originally acquired remains in question. The seller noted their great aunt and grandmother studied in Europe in the 1920s and traveled the world, the Bangor Daily News reported. As such, the pair may have collected “Le Tricorne” and other paintings during this time.

The seller’s “Le Tricorne” painting is signed and dated 1919. It measures 16″x16″ and consists of mixed media on paper.

Meanwhile, another Picasso “Le Tricorne” painting is on display at the New-York Historical Society Museum & Library. The painting was donated by the Landmarks Conservancy in 2015. And, the painting has been called a “supreme theatrical achievement” by Picasso biographer John Richardson.
