This mid 1920’s 4/4 violin is 58cm in total length and was brought over from Italy just after the second world war and was then stored with loving care in a suit case for over 70years. Where-upon the death of the liberator of this instrument, the violin was then sold to a relative whom then later sold it to me.
I’m not sure as to whether this violin can be attributed to that of Scrampelle himself, because by the mid-1920’s Scrampelle had suffered with severe arthritis’s and had difficulty in being able to produce instruments to that of his previous standard.
However, I don’t think this violin is in fact a copy of Scrampelle’s work, but rather an example of an instrument produced by apprentices, within the school of.
Either way, the instrument handles well and when played produces warm tones. The violin is a full sized 4/4 with a one piece back and covered by a rich reddish varnish and is in excellent condition.
When I purchased this violin, it came with a bow and case, but although the bow might be of the same period and therefore with the violin, the case is of a much earlier period and very solid, so probably was used as a way of keeping the instrument from damage rather than for its visual aspects
