    An early 20th century gong made from a ship's Mark IV gun shell case. The stand is made from oak with the shell casing suspended by a chain and has a oak and leather beater. The battle of Heligoland Bight was the first Naval battle of the 1st World War fought on 28th August 1914 between British and German Navy's. The battle took place in the south eastern North Sea in an area off the coast of Heligoland Denmark and was regarded as a victory for the British Navy. The base of the oak stand has a metal plaque bearing the inscription 'BATTLE OF THE BIGHT HELIGOLAND FRIDAY 28TH AUGUST 1914.' The gong is in good condition. (Circa 1914) Height 60.5cm (23.8 inches) Width 38.5cm (15.2 inches) Depth 24cm (9.4 inches)
