york and lancaster officer's blue cloth helmet

An 1878 pattern blue cloth home service helmet to the York and Lancaster Regiment of dark blue melton cloth complete with gilt metal cross piece, spike and rose pattern ear bosses that support a velvet backed gilt chin chain. It also has a gilt metal spine running down the rear of the helmet and a gilt metal trim around the front peak with the remaining helmet edge trimmed with a narrow band of patent leather. The interior has a leather sweatband and crimson silk lining. At some stage, the interior of the helmet has suffered from the effects of water damage and this has softened part of the rear of the helmet and caused some visible damage to part of the interior but is not visibly apparent when the helmet is displayed and therefore does not affect its overall appearance when on display. [See photographs of interior for more detail] To the front of the helmet is a gilt eight pointed star plate, the topmost point displaced by a King's crown indicating that the helmet is a post 1902 example. Mounted on the star is a gilt laurel wreath part overlaid with the Regimental title scroll "The York and Lancaster Regiment" in silver coloured metal. Within the laurel wreath is the garter in gilt metal and within that is the regimental emblem of a rose in silver coloured metal on a velvet background. The gilt is in very good condition throughout. Overall, this piece is in generally good condition for its age with the exception of the area damaged by water, though not visible when displayed
